Before I start my review, this is just a friendly message to bands and artists; Music submissions are now closed to Theresa’s Sound World for a little while. I’m flattered that so many of you have the confidence in me reviewing your music, but I have a massive backlog of reviews to work through, plus blogging elsewhere, a radio show, my own music, plus life in the offline world has got much busier! I will put a post out once things are a bit freer and hopefully a new music submissions video. Also, owing to time constraints, I’m only reviewing single tunes for now, so whenever I review at the moment, it will be in the ‘Track of the day’ format. If it’s a double A side/ ep or Album needing review, what I’m going to be doing is choosing my favourite track and reviewing that. Many thanks for your time and support of this blog-page; on with the review! ⭐️

Track of the Day

Track: The Thing That You Call Love

Band: 3+Dead

From the Album: 3+Dead

Record Label: SwissDarkNights Label

Genre/s: Darkwave/ Synthwave/ Post-Rock/ Goth/ Shoegaze

Today’s Track of the day is ‘The Thing That You Call Love’ by Italian Darkwave/Synth/Shoegaze act, 3+Dead. At the end of the review, there’s Bandcamp links to both the track itself and the album it comes from, simply called ‘3+Dead’.

The Thing That You Call Love: This tune starts with a huge kick and dose of electronic beats, atmospheric synths and watery, ethereal guitar. There’s phasing of effects in and out, creating a sense of otherworldliness. The start has elements I think of bands such as The Cure and Bauhaus and just a hint of Joy Division. Plus, they reminded me a lot of lesser known 90s band, Rude Club, who blended the crunch of guitars with moody synths. As the vocals drift in, the verse becomes much more synth heavy and the sound of the band amps up. The female vocals are rich, unique with a great natural range and have a Dreampop/Shoegaze shade to them. As before in recent reviews of similar music, I’ve discussed how female vocalists of these genres use their voices like an instrument, Rachel Goswell of Slowdive for instance has this ability. As the vocals on this track go, there is that musicality where vocals do resemble some atmosphere-creating instrument, but also have the body and character of early 80s singers such as Alison Moyet of Yazoo. As the tune drives into a chorus/second part, there’s a much more contemporary feel, reminiscent of modern Shoegaze and Synth-influenced Indie bands. An instrumental passage gives chance to listen to the groove and all the musical components of the band. Here it’s clear both the production and the mixing are of such a high standard; ‘The Thing That You Call Love’ is so well put together. The tune breaks into a synth and vocals only aside, before full band comes subtly flowing back. As familiar vocal and musical phrases welcomingly repeat, I feel this tune has great Single/ Radio/ Alternative Club potential. The continuing vocal and instrumentation stripped-down sections really aid variance, interest and a pop-sensibility to this tune. The bass element of this tune has a sense of foreboding and has great presence and character too. A further and slightly different musical route stylises and guides the outro of a darkly infectious and highly memorable tune.
