Track Of The Day: ‘Sorry’ by Beabadoobee

Artist: Beabadoobee

Song: Sorry

Genre/s: Indie Rock/ Alternative Rock/ Lo-Fi/ Baroque Pop/ IndiePop

My track of the day is ‘Sorry’ by Filipino-Born British Singer-Songwriter, Beabadoobee. I stumbled across this artist by accident and was immediately enchanted by her music and knew I was listening to material I had to review. ‘Sorry’ is from Beabadoobee’s forthcoming album, ‘Fake It Flowers’, which is set for release on 16th October 2020. There are a handful of tunes available to hear prior to the album release, from both ITunes and Spotify. For this review though, I’ve chosen ‘Sorry’ and there’s links to the tune, plus a pre-order link to the album, ‘Fake It Flowers’ at the end.

On with the review! ⭐️

Sorry: This tune starts with amp and guitar hums, in anticipation of something to come. Guitar and vocals come in simultaneously. The vocals have their own richness and character, but have the essence of female Indie vocalists, both of the past and the present; Hints of Tanya Donelly of Belly, her step-sister Kristin Hersh, (both of Throwing Muses) Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star and Kim and Kelley Deal. As the vocals warmly and smoothly glide, the guitar jangs nicely, little nuances and flavours of classic US & UK Alternative Rock, from Pavement to PJ Harvey. As the guitar and vocals weave, perfectly complementing each other, strings seep in, providing a Baroque-Pop backdrop. The melody evolves, matched by the lovely organic sound of the strings being bowed, following the voice note by note. The guitar stabs in and out, sometimes gaining prominence over the strings, at other points taking a more supporting role to voice and other instruments. The slight melancholic edge to ‘Sorry’ at this point is reminiscent of early-mid 90s 4AD bands, most notably the more acoustic output of Alternative Metal band, Scheer. There’s a feeling of a build up as the bows get harder, the guitar janglier, a sense of urgency and emotion conveyed in the voice. The release comes in with the drums and untethered noise-guitar which gnarls and bursts through the song, as bass smoothly thumps along with the strings. In Indie/Alternative Rock fashion, the noisier part seeps away, replaced with a quieter, vocal led part. This isn’t for long though, the bouncing, powerful musical change, accompanied by the distinctive ‘Sorry’ vocal hook fires in. The song continues to blast away, with the lush vocal and melody changes ebbing and flowing, suggesting all manner of rollercoaster emotions. ‘Sorry’ ends without overstaying it’s welcome, as a discordant guitar plucks it’s last.

‘Sorry’ is a complete Indie anthem, which has a timeless ambience, with lush, but understated and atmospheric production. This tune has an infectious musical and vocal hook-ridden drive, which creates a rich and emotional soundscape.
