Track: Reality
Band: The Churchhill Garden
Genre/s: Dreampop/ Shoegaze/ Indie
Track of the day is ‘Reality’ from Swiss/US Shoegaze/Dreampop band, The Churchhill Garden. This track was released recently and I’ll be reviewing it in detail in my review. At the end of the review, there’s links to the track ⭐️
Reality: Starting with a smooth, infectious bounce, ‘Reality’ glides in. There’s a hook-heavy bassline, cavernous, yet clear guitars and a softness in the gallop to the drums. The uptempo and rapid rhythm creates a warmth and positivity for the listener. It’s quite an intro, oozing with delight and enthralment. The intro is short, but divulges many ideas in a short span of seconds, setting the intent of the song.
Then the soothing and distinctive vocals of singer, Krissy Vanderwoude meander in. There’s a clarity a uniqueness to her voice and serves much like an musical instrument as a voice. In the Dreampop and Shoegaze genres that the churchill garden flirts with, a female voice often has that musical charm. Not caustic and abrasive like a Punk singer or bombastic or punchy like a Soul or Traditional Rock Singer. Vanderwoude’s tones have a subtly, a musicality, a way of creating a mood and atmosphere, without having to blast a listener with a vocal assault. Similar in that respect to Rachel Goswell of Slowdive or Miki Berenyi of Lush.
There’s gentle approximations of vocal harmonies as the tune progresses through it’s first minute, providing light and texture to the tune.
Musically, the instruments at times have the calmer, dreamlike edge of early 90s 4AD bands, which served as a alternative to the angst and heaviness of Grunge. Unrest were one of the first bands that sprang to mind.
There’s hints of guitar-pedal work; fuzzy yet ethereal distortions, Tremelo that wubbers rather than ping-pongs. ‘Reality’ eddies and swirls, as the vocals soar into a memorable and poppy chorus as the guitar gently crunches. There’s a lovely instrumental break, an extended, bright and dreamlike passage, that is welcomely longer than similar tunes. There’s little seconds of great musical beauty that don’t ‘celebrate the riff’ or fall into self-indulgence. This approach completely suits the song as the anticipation for a return to vocals builds. On the second verse, the vocals weave more sophisticated ideas, as the harmonies assert themselves more. The chorus clips in at a perfect pace, giving way to a vocal and musical crescendo as more fuzzy guitar fuzz tips in and vocals soar, cementing a blissful musical ascension, pulsing reality to it’s glorious end.
