Track: Ephemeral Origin Mix
Taken from: (The) Ephemeral Maxi Single
Band: Dissonance
Genre/s: Electronica/ Darkwave/ Synthpop/ Gothwave

Track of the day is one of the eight different mixes of the tune Ephemeral taken from the Ephemeral Maxi Single by Electronic/Darkwave/ Synthpop band, Dissonance. This band are based in Dallas, Texas. At the end of the review, there’s a Bandcamp link to the track.
Ephemeral Origin Mix: A solitary keyboard mournfully echoes and brings a sense of atmosphere and mood. A loneliness hangs as the keys shift. There’s a subtle, pulsating rhythm to the keys, reminiscent of Ambient music. A flavour perhaps of late 70s Brian Eno is present, as the keys weave into the vocal part. There’s lots of space for this song to inhabit and it’s very unhurried. The voice and a distant synth-bass element come in simultaneously and an almost film soundtrack-like sound is generated. As subtle synths and percussion hang and drift in the background, the vocal melody evolves and meanders. There’s a hint and a rumble that a musical and emotional tension is about to be released. Then the background drums and synths become more central in the mix. This track is reminiscent of Electronica and Industrial that crossed over into the Goth and Alternative scenes-acts such as Front 242, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson immediately spring to mind on listening to this track. The lead vocals are complimented by a second voice. This ranges from harmonies to a more ‘multi-voice’ technique. What this does essentially, is to phase the voices in and out of each other, thus creating an ethereal, dream-like effect. Vocal wise, there’s a rich, folk-singer cadence, reminiscent a little, I think of Julianne Regan of Alternative Folk/Rock band, All About Eve. The chorus drops to the lonely, minimalist keys, before synths and voice start to drift in once more. There’s a sense of sadness, in this quieter moment, before a synth-heavy, almost orchestral finale fires in. The emotional power of this final, last push is so effective in grabbing the listener’s attention.
This is my favourite remix on the Ephmeral Maxi Single. I’m putting a Bandcamp link that’ll get you straight to this version, but I do encourage you to explore the other remixes. Other versions that I think are particularly standout are the futuristic Electronica coupled with early 70s-style mellow organ of the ‘Lonely Death Mix’ , the short and sweet, almost Wiccan chant of the ‘A Capella Mix ‘and the heavier, angstier ‘Mourning Willow Mix’.
