Band: Nax

Track: Desaparecer

Genre/s: Shoegaze/ Dreampop/ Alternative Rock/ Indie

Track of the day is from a band that aren’t strangers to Theresa’s Sound World and have featured in previous reviews. Nax, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, produce ethereal, poppy and unique Shoegaze tunes, sometimes with a mellow, Dreampop edge and sometimes, as you will find out with their tune, ‘Desaparecer’ an altogether heavier character.

Desaparecer: ‘Desaparecer’ kicks off with frantic percussion and a dirty, fuzzy bass sound. It instantly, (to me) felt like an amped-up version of ‘Sexy Boy’ by French Space-Pop band, Air. ‘Desaparecer’ grabs the attention straight away. It’s stripped down and has more of an Alternative Rock feel than previous Nax releases. Then the guitar crashes in, distorted, abrasive, with an almost Thrash Metal edge to the rhythmic playing. Simultaneously, the vocals fly in, spikier than in previous Nax songs, almost Punk in nature. Both guitar and vocals have a fantastic whallop to them, intensifying the song. As all musical elements settle and lock into the song, what really starts to become apparent, is the groove. The tune becomes bouncy, danceable. It reminded me of the club-influenced rhythms that were present in Pre-Britpop British Indie, bands like Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Happy Mondays and Northside all sprang to mind. Then there’s the voice. I’ve always loved the distinctiveness of vocalist Nicolás Castello’s voice. It’s the timbre, the warmth, plus of course, the rolling ‘r’ (‘rrrs’) of the Argentinian accent. Before even a minute is up, verse shifts into chorus, with a tremeloed effect on Castello’s voice, providing a quirky and slightly psychedelic hook. In my previous review, I talked about how some of the really good Shoegaze singers use their voice (altered by effects or not) much like an instrument. Similar to singer Krissy Vanderwoude of Whimsical/ The Churchhill Garden, (who I talked about in my last review) Nicolás Castello has that musicality to his voice. There’s a swirl of ideas and an effectively understated guitar solo, set back in the mix. The tune breaks down and then flies back into distortion and groove. This track doesn’t stay still and then falls into more of a laid-back, even Prog-Rock type ambience. There’s even a nuance of Pre-The Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd present in a slight chill-out section. Not for long though, as yet again, the groove jumps back in, foreshadowing a lingering, gnarly and sustaining guitar-feedback finish.

I think, from listening to and reviewing previous Nax tunes, this is by far, my favourite. ‘Desaparecer’ is powerful, poppy, rocky and groovy.

You can listen to ‘Desaparecer’ by Nax on Bandcamp. As always, if you haven’t heard this tune before, I hope you enjoy it! ⭐️
