An artist I’ve talked about in one of my reviews recently is Guru, a US rapper, (unfortunately no longer with us) who, in the 90s, combined a live Jazz band with Hip Hop on his ‘Jazzmatazz’ project. Guru, a mega-Jazz fan put together a band, consisting of luminaries including Lonnie Liston Smith and Donald Byrd. One of the artists Guru collaborated with on this project was French Rapper, MC Solaar. Solaar is known for his vocal acrobatics and French as a language, I feel, suits rapping in a very natural and fluid way. If you’ve ever seen MC Solaar perform live (as with a great deal of French Hip Hop) you’ll know that it’s less edgy than US or UK Hip Hop and has a sense of fun and theatrics. Here’s a link to ‘Le Bien, Le Mal’, which sees both Guru and MC Solaar rapping and is my favourite tune that Guru created ⭐️
